Specialized Summer Law Programs within the U.S. 

This page lists specialized law school summer sessions designed to attract law students from around the country who are interested in a particular subject.  Many programs are also available to lawyers and practitioners in other disciplines.

American University Washington College of Law, Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.  Three-week program offered May through June.  Open to lawyers, advocates, and law students; taught in English and Spanish. 

American University Washington College of Law, Environmental Law Summer Session.  Offered annually in May through June.  Oriented toward practitioners and professionals in other disciplines as well as law students. 

National Institute of Military Justice (affiliated with American University Washington College of Law), Military Justice Summer Program.  Offered first in 2011.  One-week program in international and domestic military law.  Oriented toward practitioners and law students.   

Capital University Law School, Summer Adoption Law Institute.  Offered annually in August.  One-week program in adoption law and related issues. 

Capital University Law School, Interdisciplinary Child Welfare Institute.  Offered annually in July.  One-week program in child welfare practice. 

Golden Gate University School of Law, Summer Trial and Evidence Program.  Eight-week intensive immersion program combining Evidence, advocacy instruction, and theater training.  Oriented toward students who have recently completed 1L year. 

Hamline University School of Law, Dispute Resolution Summer Institute.  A series of short courses offered from late May to late July on ADR topics. 

Hofstra University School of Law, Enforcement of Immigration Law at the Border.  One-week course in El Paso, late May, co-sponsored by Hofstra and the National Center for Border Security & Immigration.

University of Idaho College of Law, Northwest Institute for Dispute Resolution.  Offered annually in early May.  One-week program, with courses in civil mediation, family mediation, and other dispute resolution topics.  Oriented toward practitioners and professionals in other disciplines as well as law students. 

University of Nevada Las Vegas.  Summer Institute in Dispute Resolution.  Offered annually in June.  Multiple intensive courses offered over a 4-week period.  Open to attorneys and graduate students as well as to law students.

University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce), Intellectual Property Summer Institute.  Offered annually in May through June.  Five-week program.  Oriented toward practitioners and professionals in other disciplines as well as law students.

University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce), International Criminal Law and Justice Program.  Offered annually in May.  One-week program.  Oriented toward practitioners and professionals in other disciplines as well as law students. 

New York Law School, Summer Institutes. Several concentrations are available each year, with each institute offering coursework and co-curricular activities such as externships, simulations, and field trips.  2010 institutes are in financial services, real estate, taxation, and mental disability law.  

Seattle University School of LawStudy Law in Alaska (Anchorage).  Offered annually from June through July.  Emphasis on Alaska Native and environmental law.  Externship and internship opportunities available. 

Southwestern Law School, Summer Entertainment Law Program.  Offered annually.  Entertainment, media, and sports law courses as well as externships in the entertainment industry. 

Vermont Law School, Environmental Law Center Summer Session.  Offered annually, with multiple terms from May through August; courses range from two to eight weeks. Offers a wide variety of specialized courses in environmental and natural resources law. 

William and Mary Law School, Legal Technology Summer School.  Summer school sessions concentrate on new technologies and their legal ramifications.
