Law Student Scholarships Sponsored by Legal Employers

These scholarships are offered by law firms.  In most cases, the firm also requires that the scholarship recipient work at the firm as a summer associate following 1L or 2L year.  
Unless specifically noted, scholarships are available for students attending any ABA-accredited law school in the United States.

Adler Pollock & Sheehan Diversity Scholarship
Deadline:  around April 1.
Eligibility:  Entering law student who is (1) permanent resident of Massachusetts or Rhode Island and (2) a member of a diverse group, including LGBT.
Award:  $10,000.  Recipient will be considered for summer associate position following 1L year.
Criteria:  Academic achievement, financial need, commitment to Massachusetts or Rhode Island community and profession.

Arent Fox Diversity Scholarship
Deadline
: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who are members of a diverse population that historically under-represented in the legal profession.
Award: $15,000.  Selected applicants must also commit to becoming a paid summer associate after 1L year in the law firm's New York or Washington, D.C. offices.

Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around June 15.
Eligibility: Law students who have completed their 1L year and are members of groups traditionally under-represented at large law firms.
Award: Three awards of $10,000. Recipients will also work as Baker Donelson summer associates in the summer following 2L year.

Donald W. Banner Corporate Intern Scholarship
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: Law students who (1) have completed an internship in a corporate intellectual property law department, (2) intend to pursue a career in intellectual property law, and (3) will attend law school at least one semester in the calendar year following the application deadline. The IPOEF maintains a list of companies with internship opportunities, but students are responsible for arranging their own internships.
Award: Two awards of $10,000 each.

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: Law students committed to the practice of intellectual property law who are members of a historically under-represented group in IP law (including, but not limited to, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability).
Award: $5,000.
Criteria: Academic merit, commitment to intellectual property law, written communication skills, oral communication skills, leadership qualities, community involvement.

Bullivant Houser Bailey Law Student Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who are members of any group under-represented in the legal profession and/or 1Ls coming from a disadvantaged educational or economic background.
Award: $7,500; must accept salaried summer associate position during 1L summer.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership in college and law school, willingness to serve as summer associate, contributions to the community that promote diversity within society, the legal community, and/or law school.

George Corey Scholarship
Deadline: around November 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of African-American, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic ancestry.

Davis Wright Tremaine 1L Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of color, or others of diverse backgrounds.  Must have a record of academic achievement and a commitment to civic involvement.
Award:  Three awards of $7,500 for 2L tuition and expenses.  Selected applicants must also commit to becoming a paid summer associate after 1L year in the law firm's Seattle or Portland offices.

Dickstein Shapiro Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around September 15.
Eligibility: 2Ls from diverse backgrounds, including LGBT students.
Award: Up to 3 awards of $15,000, plus paid summer position following 2L year.

Dinsmore & Shohl LLP Diversity Scholarships
Includes the Dinsmore & Shohl LLP Diversity Scholarships and the Procter & Gamble/ Dinsmore & Shohl Diversity Scholarship.
Deadline: around August 15 for 2Ls; around December 15 for 1Ls.
Eligibility: 1Ls and 2Ls who are members of groups traditionally under-represented in the legal profession, or individuals who contribute meaningfully to diversity in their communities.
Award: Multiple awards of up to $10,000. Recipients must also accept salaried summer clerk positions with Dinsmore & Shohl LLP. Recipients of the Procter & Gamble Scholarship serve a joint summer clerkship with Dinsmore & Shohl and the legal department of the Procter & Gamble Company.
Criteria: Academic or professional achievement, leadership shown through work experience, community involvement, or student activities.

Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of diverse backgrounds.
Award: Three fellowships of $10,000 plus paid summer position following 1L year.
Criteria:  Academic achievement, commitment to promoting diversity.

Faegre & Benson Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around January 1.
Eligibility: Diverse 1Ls.
Award: $12,000; must accept salaried summer associate position during 1L summer.

Finnegan, Henderson Diversity Scholarship
Deadline
: around February 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of minority heritage.
Award: $12,000 plus a paid summer associate position during the 2L summer.
Criteria: Four criteria including demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in intellectual property law.

Fish & Richardson 1L Diversity Scholarships
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: Minority 1L students.
Award: 5 awards of $5,000 plus a paid summer internship during the 1L summer.

Fredrikson & Byron Foundation Minority Scholarship
Deadline:  around March 15.
Eligibility:  1Ls who are Native American, Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American or Black, or Hispanic.
Award:  One award of $10,000 plus an invitation to become a summer associate the summer following 2L year.
Criteria:  Law school performance, professional references, work & other activities, writing samples, and personal interviews.

Heller Ehrman First-Year Student Diversity Fellowships
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who contribute to the diversity of their law school community.
Award: 4 awards of $7,500 + employment as a summer associate.

Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarships
Deadline
:  around June 1.
Eligibility:  Entering law students from disadvantaged backgrounds; must be U.S. citizens.
Award:  Ten awards of $10,000 a year for 3 years, plus mentoring and support in locating 1L summer employment with a corporate law department.
Criteria:  Academic promise, financial need, interest in diversity, leadership, community service.

K&L Gates 1L Minority Fellowship
Deadline
: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1L minority law students.
Award: $7,500 + employment as a 1L summer associate.

Katten Muchin Rosenman Minority Scholarships
Deadline: around September 15.
Eligibility: 2L minority students who have served as summer associates for the firm following 1L year.

Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholarships
Deadline:  around August 1.
Eligibility:  2Ls as of application deadline.
Award:  Four $10,000 awards for 3L year.
Criteria:  Ability to contribute to diversity objectives, success in overcoming obstacles, academic or leadership achievements, and desire to practice in a global law firm environment.

McAndrews Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls with a diverse background and a degree in science or engineering who are committed to pursuing a career in patent law in Chicago.
Award: $5,000. Recipient must also accept a paid summer clerkship following 1L year.

McDermott Minority Scholarships
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: 2L minority law students.
Award: Up to 2 awards of $15,000, plus offer to join summer associate program.

Milbank Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around September 1.
Eligibility: 2Ls who are members of populations historically underrepresented in large law firms.
Award: $15,000, plus a salaried summer associate position during 2L summer.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership, excellent writing, interpersonal skills.

Perkins Coie Diversity Scholarships
Deadline
:  around January 15.
Eligibility:  Current 1Ls.  Perkins Coie's definition of diversity includes members of racial, ethnic, disabled, and sexual orientation minority groups as well as first-generation college graduates. 
Award:  $7,500 scholarship + paid position as summer associate with Perkins Coie in the following offices:  Bay Area & Los Angeles, CA; Bellevue & Seattle, WA; Phoenix, AZ; Chicago, IL; and Portland, OR.

George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: 2Ls who contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal community and have a demonstrated commitment to practice law in Portland or Seattle.
Award: $6,000. The recipient will also serve as a summer associate with the firm following 2L summer.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership, community service, and involvement in community issues.

Reed Smith Fellowship
Deadline: around May 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who have demonstrated excellent scholarship while overcoming economic or social adversity.
Award: Six awards of $10,000. Recipients must also commit to serving as paid summer associates following 2L year.
Criteria: Academic achievement while overcoming economic or social adversity, community involvement.

Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: Contact sponsor.
Eligibility: 1Ls; 2Ls from underrepresented minority backgrounds (including, but not limited to, race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, and socioeconomic background). Before scholarship funds are disbursed, selected students must obtain a summer legal placement with governmental agency or private law firm in Sarasota County.
Award: Minimum of $5,000.
Sponsor: Sarasota County (FL) Bar Association, through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County (FL) .
  

Stoel Rives First-Year Law Student Diversity Fellowship
Deadline
: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who contribute to the diversity of the student body at their law school and who will contribute to the diversity of the legal community. Must accept salaried summer associate position at Stoel Rives.
Award: Three awards of $7,500 + a salaried summer associate position: one each in the firm's Boise, Portland, and Seattle offices.
Criteria: Academic excellence, leadership, community service, interest in practicing in Pacific Northwest, and financial need.

Townsend & Townsend & Crew Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around September 1.
Eligibility: Diverse law students with a demonstrated commitment to a career in patent law.
Award: $2,000.
Criteria: Include scientific/engineering background, commitment to career in patent law, superior academic performance.

VABAW Foundation Hong Duc Clerkship
Deadline: around February 1.
Eligibility: Current law students.
Award: Up to $5,000 to fund the law student clerking at an international law firm in Vietnam during the summer.
Criteria: Academic achievement, community service, professional interests, + 6 more criteria.
Sponsor: Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington
 

Earl Warren Scholarships
Deadline:  around February 15.  Applications must be requested by letter.
Eligibility:  College graduates with good academic records and outstanding community service.
Award:  Fifteen to twenty renewable awards of $3,000; two additional renewable scholarships of $15,000 include summer internships with Shearman & Sterling LLP.
Criteria:  Nine criteria including academic promise and commitment to serve family, community, or nation.

Paul D. White Scholarship
Deadline
: No stated deadline, but apply by January 15 for maximum consideration.
Eligibility: 1Ls of African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, or American Indian descent.
Award: $6,000 plus paid summer position following 1L year.

Winston & Strawn Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around November 1.
Eligibility: Diverse 2Ls.
Award: $10,000; must accept salaried summer associate position during 2L summer.
Criteria: Interest in large law firm practice in specified cities; academic achievement; extracurricular activities; leadership; interpersonal skills.
