Law Student Scholarships by Interests and Activities

These scholarships are tied to the law student's non-legal interests and affiliations, whether academic or recreational.  For interests within the legal field, see the Bar Associations page.  Unless specifically noted, scholarships are available for students attending any ABA-accredited law school in the United States.

Arts and Humanities

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarships
Deadline: around March 15.
Eligibility: Current student or recent graduate, GPA of 3.5 or above, nomination by undergraduate institution.
Award: Up to 30 awards of up to $50,000.
Criteria: (1) Academic ability and achievement, (2) unmet financial need, (3) will to succeed, (4) leadership and public service, (5) critical thinking ability, and (6) appreciation for or participation in the arts and humanities.
Sponsor: Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

Environment and Natural Resources 

Ann L. Holland Memorial Scholarship
Deadline
: around March 1.
Eligibility: Female graduate students in conservation/environmental studies residing in Massachusetts for five or more years.
Award: $1,000.
Sponsor: General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Massachusetts.

Idaho Trout Unlimited Graduate Scholarship
Deadline:  around June 1.
Eligibility:  Graduate students at Idaho universities.  Preference given to students conducting research projects involving native fish, members of Trout Unlimited, and Idaho residents.  Law students interested in natural resource law, the J.D./M.S. in Environmental Science, and the WOW program should consider applying.
Award:  $500.
Criteria:  Academic achievement, leadership, quality of research, research on native fish, research that benefits endangered or threatened species, wider applicability of research.
SponsorIdaho State Council of Trout Unlimited.  Scholarship is administered by the Idaho Community Foundation.

National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial Scholarships
Deadline: around April 1.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens and legal residents, including J.D. candidates, whose work is directly applicable to resource management on national wildlife refuges.
Award: Ten awards; J.D. awards limited to $5,000.
Criteria: Applications describing research that will benefit conservation efforts within the National Wildlife Refuge System.
Sponsor: National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Sands for a Sustainable Future Scholarship
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study that will help insure that resources available to society today will still be available tomorrow, preference to residents of Sonoma County, California.
Award: Varies.
Criteria: Involvement with sustainability issues.
Sponsor: Community Foundation of Sonoma County (CA)

Water Law and Policy Scholarship
Deadline: around April 1.
Eligibility: Law and graduate students majoring in law, policy, or public administration with a focus on water resources.
Award: $7,000.
Criteria: Academic achievement, commitment and motivation to her/his chosen vocation, financial need.
Sponsor: Association of California Water Agencies.

Redwood Empire Estate Planning Council Scholarship
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: Currently enrolled law students, preference to residents of Sonoma County, California.

Gender Equity Scholarship
Deadline: around May 1.
Eligibility: Current University of Idaho undergraduate and graduate students advancing gender equity.
Award: Varies.
Criteria: Work or volunteerism to advance gender equity and women’s issues on campus or in the community, academic achievement, financial need.
Sponsor: University of Idaho Women’s Center.

American Radio Relay League Foundation Scholarships
Include the

  • AARL Foundation General Fund Scholarship for any ham radio operator.
  • AARL Scholarship Honoring Barry Goldwater, K7UGA, for any novice class operator.
  • Mary Lou Brown Scholarship for residents of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
  • Central Arizona DX Association Scholarship for residents of Arizona.
  • Charles Clarke Cordle Scholarship for residents of Alabama and Georgia.
    Albert H. Hix, W8AH, Scholarship for residents of West Virginia.
  • K2TEO Martin J. Green, Sr., Memorial Scholarship for general class operators.
  • New England FEMARA Scholarship for residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are ham radio operators. Different scholarships require different levels of license.
Award: Varies by scholarship: $500–$2,500..

Health Care and Mental Health

Arc of Washington Student Grants
Deadline:  around February 15.
Eligibility:  Upper division and graduate students in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington with a demonstrated interest in mental retardation or a closely related field.
Award:  Several stipends of up to $5,000.
SponsorArc of Washington Trust Fund.

Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association Health Law Scholarship
Deadline
: around Sept. 15.
Eligibility: Law students with a strong connection to the Latino community and the state of Connecticut and an interest in health care law.
Award: Varies.
Sponsor: Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association.

National Defense

HORIZONS Foundation Scholarships
Deadline: around November 1 and July 1.
Eligibility: Currently enrolled female undergraduate and graduate students (1) with a demonstrated interest in national security or defense, (2) with a minimum GPA of 3.25, and (3) who are U.S. citizens.
Award: Multiple awards of up to $1,500.
Criteria: Academic achievement, participation in defense and national security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of objectives, recommendations, financial need.
Sponsor: Women in Defense, an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association.

Hubert H. Humphrey Doctoral Fellowships
Deadline: around March 15.
Eligibility: 3Ls.
Award: $8,000 stipend + up to $6,000 toward tuition and fees.
Criteria: Quality of J.D. research proposal describing research in arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament issues and policies.
Sponsor: U.S. Arms Control and disarmament Agency.

Appraisal Institute Education Trust Scholarship
Deadline: around March 15.
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students in appraisal, real estate, or allied fields.
Award: $3,000.

Sports 

NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships
Deadline: around January 15, March 15, and May 15.
Eligibility: College seniors with a 3.2 or above average participating on varsity teams in specified sports who are pursuing postgraduate education.
Award: Up to 174 awards of $7,500 each.
Sponsor: National Collegiate Athletic Association

Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Scholarships
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: Applicants for the Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship must be senior female basketball players who are planning to pursue a law degree. Applicants for the WSBA Scholarship must be female basketball players in last year of basketball eligibility who are planning to pursue an advanced degree, or who are completing an undergraduate degree. For both scholarships, applicants must be nominated by their coach.
Award: Three awards of $1,000.
Criteria: Academic achievement, intercollegiate basketball achievement; personal qualities.
Sponsor: Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Ambassadorial Scholarships
Deadline: varies; check with local Rotary Club.
Eligibility:  Undergraduate and graduate students planning study abroad.
Award:  Varies, but grants are significant.

Houtan Scholarship
Deadline: around June 1 and October 1.
Eligibility: Entering and current graduate students.
Award: $2,500.
Criteria: Working knowledge of Farsi; active interest in Iranian culture; academic achievement, financial need.

New England Employment Benefits Council Scholarships
Deadline: around April 1.
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students residing in New England, demonstrating an interest in employee benefits through course work and/or work experience.
Award: Up to $5,000, renewable.
Criteria: Educational performance, career aspirations.
Sponsor: New England Employment Benefits Council

IPMA-HR Graduate Study Fellowships
Deadline: around June 15.
Eligibility: IPMA-HR members seeking J.D. or master's degrees.
Award: Two awards of $2,000 each.
Criteria: Leadership ability and commitment to public service.
