Diversity Scholarships for Law Students

 

This page lists both (1) diversity scholarships limited to law students representing ethnic, racial, gender, or other minorities, especially those typically under-represented in law schools, and (2) diversity scholarships rewarding students involved with diverse communities.  

Unless specifically noted, all these diversity scholarships are available for law students attending any ABA-accredited law school in the United States.

AAUW Selected Professions Fellowships
Deadline: around January 10.
Eligibility: 2L women of color.
Award: $5,000-$12,000.
Criteria: Special consideration given to applicants showing professional promise in innovative or neglected areas of research or practice in areas of public interest.

ABA Business Law Scholarships
Eligibility: 1Ls and 2Ls who have participated in a CLEO pre-law summer institute program or pre-law weekend program and are members of the ABA Law Student Division.
Award: Up to 5 awards of $1,000 to attend the ABA Section of Business Law Spring Meeting.
Sponsor: American Bar Association Section of Business Law

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarships
Deadline: around March 1.
Eligibility: Entering law students.
Award: Twenty renewable awards of $5,000.
Criteria: Include minority status and financial need. Recipients are selected based on their qualifications, not on the law school they plan to attend.
Sponsor: American Bar Association.

Adler Pollock & Sheehan Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around April 1.
Eligibility: Entering law students who are (1) permanent residents of Massachusetts or Rhode Island and (2) members of a diverse group, including LGBT.
Award: $10,000.  Recipient will be considered for summer associate position following 1L year.
Criteria: Academic achievement, financial need, commitment to Massachusetts or Rhode Island community.

Arent Fox Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who are members of diverse populations historically under-represented in the legal profession.
Award: $15,000 + paid summer associate position after 1L year .

BESLA Scholarship
Deadline: around September 15.
Eligibility: Minority 2Ls and 3Ls with class or experience in entertainment or sports law.
Award: Multiple awards of $1,500.

Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around June 15.
Eligibility: Rising 2Ls who are members of groups traditionally under-represented at large law firms.
Award: Three awards of $10,000 + paid summer associate positions following 2L year.

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: Law students committed to the practice of intellectual property law who are members of a historically under-represented group in IP law (including, but not limited to, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability).
Award: $5,000.
Criteria: Academic achievement, commitment to intellectual property law, written communication skills, oral communication skills, leadership, community involvement.

Bullivant Houser Bailey Law Student Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who are members of any group under-represented in the legal profession and/or 1Ls coming from a disadvantaged educational or economic background.
Award: $7,500 + paid summer associate position following 1L year.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership in college and law school, contributions to the community that promote diversity within society, the legal community, and/or law school.

Deadline: around September 15.
Eligibility: 2Ls from diverse backgrounds, including LGBT students.
Award: Up to 3 awards of $15,000, + paid summer positions following 2L year.

Dinsmore & Shohl LLP Diversity Scholarships
Deadline: around August 15 for 2Ls; around December 15 for 1Ls.
Eligibility: 1Ls and 2Ls who are members of groups traditionally under-represented in the legal profession, or individuals who contribute meaningfully to diversity in their communities.
Award: Multiple awards of up to $10,000 + paid summer clerkships. Two separate awards are available: the Dinsmore & Shohl LLP Diversity Scholarships and the Procter & Gamble/ Dinsmore & Shohl Diversity Scholarship.
Criteria: Academic or professional achievement; leadership shown through work experience, community involvement, or student activities.

Dorsey & Whitney Diversity Fellowship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of diverse backgrounds.
Award: Three fellowships of $10,000 + paid summer positions following 1L year.

DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around August 1.
Eligibility: 2Ls who are African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan-Asian, Native American, or female; must complete an essay of not over 1,000 words on threats to the independence of the U.S. judiciary.
Award: $10,000.
Criteria: Demonstrated academic excellence, service to the profession, service to the community, and service to the cause of diversity.
Sponsor: DRI (a national organization of corporate counsel and civil defense trial lawyers).

Faegre & Benson Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around January 1.
Eligibility: Diverse 1Ls.
Award: $12,000; must accept salaried summer associate position during 1L summer.

Finnegan, Henderson Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of minority heritage.
Award: $12,000 + paid summer associate position following 2L year.
Criteria: Four criteria including demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in intellectual property law.

Fish & Richardson 1L Diversity Scholarships

Eligibility: Minority 1L students.

Fredrikson & Byron Foundation Minority Scholarship
Deadline: around March 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who are Native American, Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American or Black, or Hispanic.
Award: One award of $10,000 plus an invitation to become a summer associate the summer following 2L year.

Deadline: around May 1.
Eligibility: 1Ls & 2Ls who are (1) African American, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, or biracial, and (2) student members of ATLA.
Award: Up to six awards of $1,000.
Criteria: Interest and proficiency in trial advocacy skills, desire to represent victims, commitment to ATLA and its mission through involvement ATLA student chapter and Minority Caucus activities, financial need.

Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who contribute to the diversity of their law school community.
Award: 4 awards of $7,500 + employment as a summer associate.

Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarships
Deadline: around June 1.
Eligibility: Entering law students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Award: Ten awards of $10,000 a year for 3 years, plus mentoring and support in locating 1L summer employment with a corporate law department.
Criteria: Academic promise, financial need, interest in diversity, leadership, community service.

K&L Gates 1L Minority Fellowship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1L minority law students.
Award: $7,500 + employment as a 1L summer associate.

Katten Muchin Rosenman Minority Scholarships

Amelia Kemp Scholarship
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility:  Undergraduate and graduate students who are (1) women of color, (2) members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, (3) have experienced an interruption in education of at least two years, and (4) are at least 21 years old.
Award: Average award of $600; renewable.

Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholarships
Deadline: around August 1.
Eligibility: 2Ls as of application deadline.
Award: Four $10,000 awards for 3L year.
Criteria: Ability to contribute to diversity objectives, success in overcoming obstacles, academic or leadership achievements, and desire to practice in a global law firm environment.

LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Client Review Fellowship
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: 3Ls.

Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls of diverse backgrounds and a degree in science or engineering who are committed to pursuing a career in patent law in Chicago.

Deadline: around September 1.
Eligibility: 2Ls who are members of populations historically underrepresented in large law firms.
Award: $15,000, + a salaried summer associate position during 2L summer.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership, excellent writing, interpersonal skills.

Minority Fellowships in Environmental Law
Deadline: around November 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls and 2Ls minority group members who either (1) are New York residents attending any law school, or (2) are attending New York law schools. The stipends are limited to students spending the summer working on legal matters for a government environmental agency or public interest environmental organization in New York.
Award: $6.000.
Criteria: Interest in environmental issues, academic achievement, outstanding personal qualities; leadership; financial need.
Sponsor: New York State Bar Association Environmental Law Section.
 

Morris Scholarships
Deadline: around Feb. 1.
Eligibility: Iowa high school graduates and Iowa residents attending any U.S. university who are of minority ethnic status.
Award: Varies.
Sponsor: Morris Scholarship Fund.

Oregon Minority Lawyers Association / Oregon State Bar AAP Bar Exam Grants
Deadline: around April 15 and November 15.
Eligibility: Graduating law students / law school graduates who (1) are members of any racial or ethnic minority, (2) have financial need, (3) are committed to practicing law in Oregon and advancing the mission of the Oregon State Bar Affirmative Action Program, and (4) have registered with the Oregon State Bar Affirmative Action Program.
Award: Three grants for February exam, plus six grants for July exam. Grants consist of reimbursement of bar application fee and payment of expenses for bar preparation course focusing on MBE testing.
Sponsor: Oregon Minority Lawyers Association and the Oregon State Bar.
  

Peoria County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around March 1.
Eligibility: Racial and ethnic minority students who are entering or current 1Ls.
Award: $1,000, renewable for 2 additional years.
Criteria: Financial need, educational background, and ties to Peoria, Illinois.

Perceptions Saginaw Valley Scholarship.
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: Michigan residents pursuing graduate or undergraduate degrees who have
promoted mutual respect and acceptance across borders of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression
Award: $500.
Criteria: Essay, community service, leadership, career goals.
Sponsor: Saginaw (MI) Community Foundation.
 

Perkins Coie Diversity Scholarships
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: Current 1Ls. Perkins Coie's definition of diversity includes members of racial, ethnic, disabled, and sexual orientation minority groups as well as first-generation college graduates.
Award: $7,500 scholarship + paid position as Perkins Coie summer associate in Bay Area, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Bellevue, WA, Seattle, WA; Phoenix, AZ; Chicago, IL; or Portland, OR.

George V. Powell Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around October 1.
Eligibility: 2Ls who contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal community and have a demonstrated commitment to practice law in Portland, Oregon, or Seattle, Washington.
Award: $6,000 + paid position as summer associate following 2L year.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership, community service, community involvement.

Reed Smith Fellowship
Deadline: around May 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who have demonstrated excellent scholarship while overcoming economic or social adversity.
Award: Six awards of $10,000 + paid positions as summer associate following 2L year.
Criteria: Academic achievement while overcoming economic or social adversity, community involvement.

Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: Contact sponsor.
Eligibility: 1Ls; 2Ls from underrepresented minority backgrounds (including, but not limited to, race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, and socioeconomic background). Before scholarship funds are disbursed, selected students must obtain a summer legal placement with governmental agency or private law firm in Sarasota County.
Award: Minimum of $5,000.
Sponsor: Sarasota County (FL) Bar Association, through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County (FL) .
 

Scovel Richardson Scholarship
Deadline: around May 1.
Eligibility: Current 1Ls and 2Ls who are minority students with limited financial means.
Award: $2,500-$3,000.
Criteria: Financial need, academic achievement, community service. Preference to students who plan to work in the Greater St. Louis, Missouri, metropolitan area.

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
Deadline: around November 1.
Eligibility: Graduate students who are (1) resident aliens, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized parents, (2) not over 30 years old, and (3) retain loyalty and commitment to both their country of origin and the United States.
Award: Thirty fellowships for up to two years of graduate or professional study, consisting of 1/2 tuition plus maintenance grant of $20,000.
Criteria: Evidence of at least two of the following three attributes: (1) creativity, originality, and initiative, (2) capacity for accomplishment, and (3) commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Stoel Rives First-Year Law Student Diversity Fellowship
Deadline: around January 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who contribute to the diversity of the student body at their law school and who will contribute to the diversity of the legal community. Must accept salaried summer associate position at Stoel Rives.
Award: Three awards of $7,500 + a salaried summer associate position: one each in the firm's Boise, Portland, and Seattle offices.
Criteria: Academic achievement, leadership, community service, interest in practicing in Pacific Northwest, financial need.

George A. Strait Minority Scholarship
Deadline: around April 1.
Eligibility: Law students with meaningful law library experience who intend to pursue a career in law librarianship and are African American, Aleut, Asian American, Eskimo, Hispanic American, Native American, or Pacific Islanders.
Award: Varies.
Criteria: Preference given to members of the AALS.
Sponsor: American Association of Law Libraries.

Thompson Hine Minority Scholarship
Deadline: around September 15.
Eligibility: Current 2Ls who are members of ethnic minorities.
Award: $10,000; must also accept a paid summer associate position during the 2L summer.

Townsend & Townsend & Crew Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around September 1.
Eligibility: Diverse law students with a demonstrated commitment to a career in patent law.
Award: $2,000.
Criteria: Scientific/engineering background, commitment to career in patent law, academic achievement.

J.L. Turner Minority Law Student Scholarships
Deadline: around September 15.
Eligibility: Minority law students from the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Award: Varies by scholarship.
Criteria: Both merit-based and need-based.

United Methodist Church Crusade National Scholarships
Deadline: around November 15.
Eligibility: Graduate students who are members of racial or ethnic minorities.
Award: Up to 10 awards of $250-$12,500.
Criteria: Financial need, furtherance of the mission of the church through 10 years of service to church or community.
Sponsor: United Methodist Church Global Ministries.

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: Entering or current undergraduate and graduate students with an annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less. Up to 50% of awards will be targeted to members of ethnic minorities and persons with documented physical disabilities. Priority consideration to applicants from Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming; however, applicants from all U.S. states and territories are eligible.
Award: Multiple one-time awards of $1,500.
Criteria: Academic achievement, school and community service, work experience, career and educational aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances.

Varnum Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: 1Ls who are members of an ethnic or racial minority or demonstrate a significant commitment to issues of diversity and inclusion; must also be Michigan residents attending any law school or enrolled in a Michigan law school.
Award: Two awards of $4,000. Recipients will also be considered for summer clerkships following 1L year.

Warner, Norcross & Judd Minority Scholarship
Deadline: around April 15.
Eligibility: Entering and current law students who are (1) current or former Michigan residents and (2) members of an ethnic or racial minority.

Paul D. White Scholarship
Deadline: Apply by January 15 for maximum consideration.
Eligibility: 1Ls of African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, or American Indian descent.

Sydney B. Williams Jr. Intellectual Property Law Scholarships
Deadline: around February 15.
Eligibility: Law students who are members of under-represented minority groups.
Award: $10,000 per year, renewable upon reapplication for up to three years.
Criteria: Commitment to intellectual property law, academic achievement, financial need, and general factors.

Winston & Strawn Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: around November 1.
Eligibility: Diverse 2Ls.
Award: $10,000; must accept salaried summer associate position during 2L summer.

Eligibility: Law students from Central Pennsylvania who are members of a racial or ethnic minority.
Award: Two awards of $3,500.

Eligibility: Entering and current 1Ls.
Award: Six awards of $1,000.

William A. McClain Scholarship
Deadline:  around April 1.
Eligibility: Black law students who are residents of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Criteria: Demonstrated leadership, commitment to community, and financial need.

National Bar Institute African American Law Student Fellowships
Deadline: around May 1.
Eligibility: 3Ls who intend to practice law in the Black community.
Award: $1,000-$10,000.
Criteria: Academic qualifications; contribution potential; commitment to African- American issues; financial need.

Rodney Pulliam Memorial Scholarship
Deadline: around November 1.
Eligibility: Graduating 3Ls who are NBLSA members.
Award: Six awards of $500 toward Bar/Bri bar review courses.
Criteria: Excellence in 1,000-word essay on specified topic.
Sponsor: National Black Law Students Association.

Earl Warren Scholarships
Deadline: around February 15. Applications must be requested by letter.
Eligibility: College graduates with good academic records and outstanding community service.
Award: Fifteen to twenty renewable awards of $3,000; two additional renewable scholarships of $15,000 include summer internships with Shearman & Sterling LLP.
Criteria: Nine criteria including academic achievement and commitment to serve family, community, or nation.

Elsie Mae White Memorial Scholarship
Deadline: around May 15.
Eligibility: African-American undergraduate and graduate students; preference to students attending land grant universities.
Award: Up to $1,000.

Yes You Can Scholarship
Deadline: around March 15.
Eligibility: African-American residents of King or Snohomish Counties, Washington, or Tipton County, Tennessee, pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in business, law, technology, science, or education.

Asian / Pacific Islander

Here are scholarships for law students of Asian-American and Pacific Islander heritage, including Hawai'ian Natives.  Included are several scholarships targeted at specific ethnicities including Armenian, Hmong, Iranian, Japanese, and Korean. 

Armenian Bar Association Scholarship
Deadline: around March 15.
Eligibility: Entering and current law students who are involved in the Armenian community.
Award: Approximately $2,000, which may be divided between two or more awardees.
Criteria: Academic potential, involvement in the Armenian community.
Sponsor: Armenian Bar Association.

Armenian General Benevolent Union Scholarships
Deadline: around April 1.
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students of Armenian descent.
Award: Interest-free loans up to $7,500.
Sponsor: Armenian General Benevolent Union.  

Armenian Professional Society Scholarships
Deadline: around August 15.
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students.
