The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) consists of 60 multiple-choice questions given during an exam period lasting just over two hours. Most jurisdictions require applicants to pass the MPRE in order to be admitted to the bar. The MPRE is given three times a year, but not during administration of the bar exam.
The MPRE is designed to measure knowledge and understanding of the standards of professional conduct. It covers the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, the ABA Model Code of Judicial Conduct, controlling constitutional decisions, and generally accepted principles established in case law.
If you are taking the MPRE, visit the website of the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) early. The NCBE provides a detailed description and outline of the subject matter of the MPRE and the types of questions and responses that appear, as well as testing dates and locations and application procedures. A free practice exam is available online. While the "MPRE Sample Questions VI" is available for purchase, the NCBE warns that the questions don't reflect the style and format of current questions.
