Clinical Programs Banner

Clinical education at the University of Idaho College of Law combines actual client representation, simulation, extern placement, and classroom instruction. Clinical courses are defined as those courses which concentrate on the study of the practice of law and the intersection of doctrine and process rather than pure doctrine.

CLINIC MISSION:
The clinic prepares students to be effective lawyers, and provides access to legal services for underserved populations, through a service-based educational program integrating theory with application, and practice skills with ethical values.

Appellate Clinic
Students in the Appellate Clinic brief and argue cases before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Idaho appellate courts.  The Appellate Clinic allows interested students to work intensively on one or two complex cases.

General Clinic
Students in our General Clinic represent clients in a wide variety of cases, including:  misdemeanor defense, family law, consumer protection, landlord-tenant disputes, probate and civil rights.

Small Business Legal Clinic
The Small Business Legal Clinic (SBLC) provides third-year students with hands-on business transaction experience in a live-client setting.

Tax Clinic
Students in the Tax Clinic represent taxpayers from Idaho and surrounding states in controversies with the Internal Revenue Service.   Students also conduct public information and outreach presentations to inform taxpayers for whom English is a second language and other low-income taxpayers about tax law issues.

Tribal and Immigration Clinic
Students in the Tribal and Immigration Clinic represent Nez Perce and other tribal members in criminal and juvenile delinquency matters, primarily in Nez Perce Tribal Court.  Students also help immigrants from a variety of countries seeking asylum, permanent residence, citizenship, and relief from deportation.

Externships
The Extern Program aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice for advanced law students by affording them the opportunity to work on a close, personal basis with judges or practicing attorneys.

Victims' Rights Clinic
The Victims' Rights Clinic is staffed by third-year law students with limited licenses to practice law.  These students provide legal services to the victims throughout criminal proceedings under the supervision of an experienced attorney.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Clinic
The DVSA Clinic provides legal assistance in civil proceedings to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking, regardless of the clients' income level.

Clinical Labs

Pro Se Clinic Lab
This cooperative effort allows second and third year law students to staff the Court Assistance Office in the Latah County Courthouse in Moscow, Idaho. Students assist predominantly self-represented litigants, two-thirds of whom are involved in family cases, including divorce, domestic violence, custody and modification proceedings.

Bankruptcy Lab
Students in this program first spend approximately six weeks studying the practical side of bankruptcy practice.  This involves study of the structure, organization, and mission of the U.S. Bankruptcy Courty, how to conduct initial conferences, how to prepare the Official Forms, and how exemptions fit into the bankruptcy  picture.

Children and the Law Lab
Students in the Children in the Law Seminar can participate in a lab where they gain hands-on experience serving as Guardians Ad Litem and spokespersons for CASA volunteers on the Couer d' Alene Reservation.  This collaborative effort between the law school, tribal  court, and the tribe allows these students to gain valuable legal experience and provide a needed service.
